TOWN OF WALLKILL – For the last several years the Town of Wallkill has asked the state for permission to install red light cameras at busy intersections as a safety measure.

In the past, the Democrat-controlled Assembly rejected the request while it had support from the Republican-controlled Senate. Now that both houses and the governor are Democrat-controlled, the request remains in limbo.

Wallkill Town Supervisor Edward Diana is hopeful that it will be approved saying it is a matter of safety.

“There are certain parts of town where red lights are at very busy intersections and will be, for us, a public safety issue. It would help us tremendously.”

One of those troubled intersections is on Route 211 in front of Walmart where drivers regularly turn into the shopping center long after the traffic light turns red.
