Century-old jail, once labled a “dungeon” by a state corrections
official,
likely to come down

MONTICELLO – When the new Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and county jail become operational next summer, the more than 100-year-old facility in downtown Monticello is likely to be leveled.
County Manager Joshua Potosek said the general consensus is that the existing building will have to be razed.
“There have been some high level internal preliminary conversations on anything from strict economic development, putting it back on the tax rolls, to court space to other administrative space, so they haven’t really come to any terms on exactly what they want to see happen there, but I think the one thing we do know is it has to come down,” Potosek said.
The future of the old jail and plans for the property will be up to the county
legislature.
