GOSHEN – Orange County and Airbnb have reached an agreement for the company to collect local hotel and motel room taxes on listings they have in the county.
County Executive Steven Neuhaus said that will translate to an estimated $40,000 to $50,000 annually to the county’s coffers.
“Up until now we have gotten zero money from Airbnb. People pay a tax for the hotel, they pay tax for other places but they don’t pay for Airbnb, so we want to make sure that is generated and it is a fair planning field,” Neuhaus said. “The state hasn’t enacted a law on it so we did our own settlement just like other counties have.”
Dutchess and Sullivan counties are among the 28 statewide that have reached
agreements with Airbnb.
The company estimated there are 440 active hosts in Orange County that shared their homes with some 27,800 guests over the past year.
