WHITE PLAINS – Former Mayor Alfred Del Vecchio of White Plains
died on Wednesday, December 5. He was 95 years old.
He was the longest serving mayor in the city’s history having
served four terms, from 1976 to 1993.

“During his tenure downtown White Plains saw significant change,”
said current Mayor Thomas Roach. “Mayor Del Vecchio guided the city
through the process of urban renewal, which changed the face of the central
business district.”

Roach said as mayor, Del Vecchio oversaw the modernization of land use
regulation in the city. He was an early advocate for the use of energy
efficiency technology. He said under Del Vecchio’s tenure, the city
first tested and used environmentally friend alternative fuel vehicles.

Roach also cited Del Vecchio with securing permanent, direct Community
Development Block Grant funding for the city through federal legislation.

He also managed the complete reconstruction of the city’s Ebersole
ice-skating rink without losing any skating season time. He acquired the
closed state armory on South Broadway and arranged for its conversion
to senior citizen housing and a public senior citizen community center
that is still in use today.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said Del Vecchio “served
the city he loved for many years and helped to shape White Plains into
the city that it is today.”
