Mattresses and other items were removed from damaged guest rooms

HIGHLAND – A report of smoke in the Super 8 Motel on Route 9W in Highland late Tuesday morning brought out firefighters who confirmed there was a fire in the building.
Additional firefighters were summoned from Esopus and Milton to aid the Highland volunteers along with career firefighters with an engine and tower ladder from the City of Poughkeepsie.
Firefighters discovered a fire in one of the second-floor rooms on the north end of the motel and extinguished the blaze.  Several rooms sustained smoke and/or water damage and firefighters pulled ceilings down in second floor guest rooms to ensure that the fire had not spread into the attic space of the motel.  Mattresses, ironing boards and other combustible materials were removed from the building through the second floor hallway window.
Central Hudson Gas and Electric turned off power to the building.  Town of Lloyd Police and State troopers assisted at the scene along with Mobile Life Support Services and Ulster County Emergency Management.
Representatives from the motel were unavailable for comment at the scene.
