Dormant West End Firehouse

NEWBURGH – Work to remediate an asbestos problem in Newburgh’s West End Firehouse on upper Broadway has not yet begun as a course of action is being mapped out. When that has been complete, work can begin.
Acting Fire Chief Terry Ahlers doesn’t anticipate the actual work will take a long time.
“To me it doesn’t seem like it’s a big job; there is nothing airborne,” Ahlers said. “It’s my understanding in speaking to the engineer that it’s just a matter of sealing it in place.”
Engine Three, which is normally stationed in the West End Firehouse, is temporarily at the main firehouse on lower Broadway with plans to house it temporarily just over the city line at the Good Will Firehouse in the Town of Newburgh. That has not happened yet so last week’s upper Broadway fire, literally next door to the shuttered fire station, took minutes longer for fire trucks to travel the full length of Broadway the central firehouse to the fire scene.
