CARMEL – Through the first nine months of 2018, Putnam County Coroner Dr. Michael Nesheiwat investigated a dozen drug overdose death across the county.
The Putnam Legislature’s Protective Services Committee learned the grim news Monday evening at its monthly meeting.
From January through March four accidental overdoses deaths were reported and from April through June, an additional eight people succumbed to a drug overdose.
The positive news was that from July through September, not a single person died from an accidental drug overdose countywide.
Statistics from October through December 31 will be available in January, 2019.
A total of 62 cases were investigated by the Coroner’s Office this year from January 1 through September 30 that included 30 from natural causes; 21 resulting from accidental causes; five from suicide; one undetermined and five cases still pending.
The committee consisting of Legislators Paul Jonke, Bill Gouldman and Neal Sullivan accepted the report without comment.
Putnam is not alone.  In Sullivan County, the coroner’s office reports monthly on a growing number of opioid deaths.
