MID-HUDSON VALLEY – Services are being held this evening across the region
in memory of those killed and wounded at the Tree of Life Synagogue in
Pittsburgh during a Saturday morning service.
Police have arrested a local man, who is said to have anti-Semetic leanings,
for opening fire and killing 11 people and wounding six others, including
four police officers, during a Saturday morning service that included
a baby naming ceremony.
Services were set for Monroe, Poughkeepsie and Monticello among other
areas. On Monday at 5 p.m. in front of the Orange County Government Center
in Goshen, there will be a community-wide service.
In the meantime, law enforcement has stepped up security around houses
of worship in the region as a precaution against any potential copycats.
The massacre in Pittsburgh comes on the heels of the murder of two African-American
women who were shot and killed in a Kroger grocery store in suburban Louisville
by a man who had tried and failed to gain access to a predominantly African-American
church.
