Mama and her two cubs take a nap in the City of Kingston on Friday

KINGSTON – A mama bear and her two cuts spent much of Friday sightseeing
in the City of Kingston.

The animals were first seen in backyards in the area of Downs and Belvedere
streets. Hours later, at 2 p.m., they were spotted sleeping in a backyard
tree.

Police said given the population density in the area, it was decided to
remove the mother and cubs to a less populated area of the state. Mama
and one cut were removed state environmental conservation police.

The third bear decided he was not leaving without making a scene. He led
police and DEC officials on a chase that went through backyards toward
Broadway and over to O’Neil Street, doubling back to Downs Street
and onto the Catskill Mountain Rail trail.

The teenage cub ran on the old railroad toward Kingston Plaza, but left
the rail trail at Albany Avenue and ran up into the interchange at Albany
Avenue/I-587/Broadway. He ran through Friday afternoon traffic crossing
over and going back down into the forest adjacent to Chandler Drive and
Albany Avenue.

Police said the cut was old enough to live on his own so there were no
concerns for him at this time, police said.
