GOSHEN – A 24-year-old Port Jervis woman was convicted in Orange
County Court on Thursday to criminally negligent homicide and criminal
sale of a controlled substance in connection with the April 18, 2018 death
of a disabled Port Jervis man.
Katelynn Smith admitted in court that she sold 12 oxycodone pills to a
quadriplegic man in his Port Jervis home and that she helped him take
the pills by crushing them up and rolling up a dollar bill for him to
snort all of the crushed pills.
She said she knew the man was drinking vodka at the time and that he took
other medications, including Klonopin, a sedative.
Smith said she then left the man’s home and autopsy findings revealed
his cause of death to be a combination of the oxycodone, alcohol and the
active ingredient in Klonopin.
When sentenced in December, the district attorney’s office will
recommend a six year prison sentence plus a term of post-release supervision.
