CORTLANDT – A car-truck crash on the Bear Mountain Bridge Road closed the heavily traveled artery from the bridge to the Annsville Traffic Circle for five hours Saturday. Massive traffic delays were reported all Saturday morning with traffic backed up for miles throughout lower Philipstown.
State Police said a dump truck struck a sedan before crashing through large boulders lining the side of the road and coming to a stop at the edge of a steep slope with diesel fuel leaking from its tanks.
The Putnam County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center in Carmel summoned the Continental Village Fire Department which responded with its tanker and rescue vehicle.
EMS from Continental Village along with the Peekskill Volunteer Ambulance Corps assessed both operators neither requesting transport to the hospital.
A hazmat team from the Montrose Veterans Affairs Hospital responded and assisted with the offloading of diesel fuel from the leaking tank. Fire units cleared the scene around 1 p.m. after the truck was towed from the scene and the road reopened by State Police.
