GOSHEN – Following a backlash over a proposed 26 percent pay hike for Orange County lawmakers, county executive and county clerk, legislative leadership has put forth a new plan that would see raises of nine percent in the first year and three percent in each of the next two years.
One job that will not see a raise in this new plan is county executive, said Legislature Chairman Stephen Brescia.
“He will be taking three zeroes,” Brescia said. “He won’t be getting any. We will look at his salary for the next term.”
County Executive Steven Neuhaus makes about $184,000 a year now. The
proposed raise would have taken him to $208,000.
During his 2019 budget message earlier this week, he said he would veto the large 26 percent raises across the board.
Brescia believes the latest pay raise plan is best.
“We have had five years of zeroes. This is trying to stop the gap a little bit and I think that first nine percent adjustment will make up for some of that inaction and then we will try to adjust it and keep it in line with the CSEA raises for the next term.”
Lawmakers will meet in committee on Monday to discuss the new plan before the full legislature meets on Thursday.
