MONTICELLO – A Belleville, New Jersey man was arrested by Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly sold a man a new television in a sealed carton for $400 at a gas station in Rock Hill. But when the man got home on Friday, September 21, he found he had purchased a box of rocks.
A short time later, the victim spotted the scam artist at the Trading Post in Rock Hill and when he confronted the man, he drove away. The victim got his license plate number.
Deputies tracked the vehicle to New Jersey with the help of the Belleville Police Department and got Jonathan Kimball, 37, to surrender at the sheriff’s office in Monticello on Wednesday, September 26.
Kimball was charged with fraudulent accosting and criminal nuisance, both misdemeanors, as well as the violation of peddling without a license under Town of Thompson law. He was released on $200 bail pending a future court appearance.
Sheriff Michael Schiff cautioned residents to be alert to possible scams like this one. “If someone is offering to sell you electronics out of the back of a car at a gas station for a new low price, it is probably too good to be true,” he said.
