Unemployment continues decline in area counties

ALBANY – The unemployment rate in the Hudson Valley in the 12 months ending in August was 4.0 percent, down from 4.7 percent during the same period in 2017, according to the state labor department. In August, there were 45,800 people without jobs compared with 54,000 in August 2017.
Columbia County had the lowest rate in the state with a 3.1 percent rate of joblessness, down from 3.7 percent one year earlier.
Dutchess County, with 3.6 percent, was second lowest in the region. One year earlier, the Dutchess rate was 4.4 percent.
Sullivan County, with 3.7 percent unemployment, declined from 4.4 percent in August 2017.
Putnam County, with 3.8 percent joblessness, declined from 4.4 percent.
Rockland and Ulster counties each came in with 3.9 percent joblessness in August. Rockland declined from 4.6 percent while Ulster dropped from 4.7 percent.
Orange County, with 4.0 percent joblessness, declined from 4.8 percent in August 2017.
Westchester County, at 4.1 percent, declined from 4.8 percent and Greene County, with 4.3 percent unemployment, declined from 5.1 percent one year earlier.
