Monticello man sentenced to life in prison as ‘three strikes felon’

MONTICELLO – A Monticello man was sentenced last Friday in Sullivan County Court to 15 years to life in state prison as a persistent felony offender.
Angelo “Deon” Johnson, 41, was convicted in November 2017 of breaking into a room at a local motel where the victim was living and stealing personal property.
Monticello Police made the arrest following an investigation.
District Attorney James Farrell’s Office asked the court to find Johnson was a persistent felony offender or “three strikes” felon.
Johnson was previously convicted of selling crack cocaine to an undercover state trooper for which he received five years in state prison and previously convicted of felony endangering the welfare of a child in Middlesex County, New Jersey in 2003 for having sexual contact with an 11-year-old child for which he received four years in prison.
Farrell said Johnson’s criminal record spans the last 26 years and also includes 27 misdemeanor convictions including 11 petit larceny convictions, five assault convictions and convictions for obstructing governmental administration, criminal trespass, possession of burglar’s tools, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.
