NEWBURGH – The center apartment of a three-unit complex at 49 Dubois
Street, which partially collapsed on Wednesday, must be razed, Newburgh
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said on Thursday.
Water damage over the years took its toll on the vacant apartment that the city took over for failure of the owner to pay back taxes.
The apartments on either side of the damaged one were ordered evacuated, said Ciaravino.
“Of outstanding concern to us is the structural integrity that could be caused by, not only the collapse, but the demolition itself to the buildings immediately to the north and to the south of the impaired structure,” he said.
If all the permits are secured quickly, the building could be demolished as soon as today.
This partial building collapse follows a collapse of a structure at 302 Grand Street in Newburgh.
