PEEKSKILL – The gun buyback event held in the City of Peekskill on Saturday was so successful that 50 people lined up at the door by 9 a.m. opening and the $25,000 in funds were exhausted by 11:30 a.m.
City Police said as a result, “mass amounts of firearms” were taken off the streets. They could have wound up in the wrong hands and the wrong side of the law, police said.
According to Gun Violence Archive, in 2018 alone, the bad guys used firearms to cause the deaths of almost 10,000 people in the US.
The goal of the gun buyback program was to minimize the risk of unsecured weapons being used for criminal activity and to eliminate their accessibility to the mentally unstable and children.
“We as a community were able to take a positive step in the right direction and we should all be Peekskill Proud of this accomplishment,” a post on the Peekskill City Police Facebook page stated.
