TARRYTOWN – The second span of the new Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge over the Hudson River was opened for traffic Tuesday night.
“After Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) determined the old Tappan Zee Bridge was stable, TZC implemented the traffic switch onto the new span successfully,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew Driscoll.
The span was to open last Friday night, but that was delayed when it was determined that a section of the adjacent old bridge was unstable and posed a threat to the new structure.
An engineering study was conducted and it was determined while there was a flaw in the old section, it posed no threat to the new bridge.
Cuomo’s Democratic opponent in the Thursday primary election, Cynthia Nixon, and Republican gubernatorial candidate Marcus Molinaro both claimed the opening of the second span was timed to Cuomo prior to the September 13 primary.
Now, the New York Times has reported the opening of the second span was politically motivated as a state official wrote to the contractor in July that the work should be completed by August 24.
