Remnant of old Tappan Zee Bridge, just feet from the
new Cuomo bridge
NYACK – The eastbound span of the Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge is now scheduled to open Tuesday (tomorrow) evening, weather permitting, the president of Tappan Zee Constructors said Sunday night.
The company has determined after evaluation that the old Tappan Zee Bridge east anchor span “is damaged but currently stable with certain key components highly stressed.”
Terry Towle said the condition “does not threaten” the new bridge which is “prepared and ready to receive traffic.”
He did say that “where there remains a possibility of the old bridge
east span failing, in the event it does, it will fall without a safety
zone that does not affect vessel traffic or the structural integrity of
the new eastbound bridge.”
Towle said they have recommended to the Thruway Authority that eastbound traffic be shifted to the span of the new bridge on Tuesday. Currently, all traffic in both directions, is still using the northbound span.
