PLATTEKILL – An Ulster County Sheriff’s deputy and a state trooper are being credited with saving a family’s life as a fully involved shed fire was threatening to consume their adjacent house in the Town of Plattekill.
Deputy Damon Alberts and Trooper Ryan Benincasa were investigating a domestic dispute around 1:40 a.m. on Friday, September 7 when they spotted the fire on nearby Overland Drive. They found the shed engulfed in flames with the intense heat already melting some of the siding and roof soffits on the adjacent house.
The two officers made several unsuccessful attempts to alert the residents and located an air conditioner in a window at the rear of the building. They removed it and gain entry to alert the family to evacuate.
Fire personnel later said it was their belief that had the residents not been evacuated, the fire likely would have been fatal.
