NEWBURGH – In recognition of State Senator William Larkin’s efforts to make the SUNY Orange Newburgh campus a reality more than a decade ago, the college has dedicated the central lawn adjacent to Kaplan Hall, overlooking the Hudson River, as “The William J. Larkin Jr. Plaza.”
Larkin is retiring at the end of the year.
The senator was among the key players in making the college campus a reality. Both he and Newburgh philanthropist William Kaplan lobbied with the Middletown-based college to secure the state and county funding necessary to expand the Newburgh Extension Centre into a full-fledged campus.
The Larkin Plaza “forever commemorates his lifelong commitment to others and making sure that a higher education is available to all,” said Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus. “Senator Larkin is a legend in the Hudson Valley and this recognition by SUNY Orange is well deserved.”
