Partially draiined pond adjacent to Washington Lake, the city’s offline main water supply

NEW WINDSOR – A sinkhole caused by a large leaking water main that threatened the structural integrity of Washington Lake is being repaired.
The lake is the City of Newburgh’s former water source.
The 24-inch water main in question has not been in use, but with leaks, threatened the lake and surrounding area.
The remediation work is being performed under the direction of the city’s water and engineering departments, noted Mayor Torrance Harvey.
“Those guys are the experts on that stuff and we got the needed and necessary personnel to address those leaks and also to responsibly remove the fish to remediate that issue,” Harvey said.
The broken pipe is over 100 years old and if not repaired, could potentially result in the entire lake draining.
