Anti-fracking protestors on the Barryville Bridge
BARRYVILLE – Members of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Damascus
Citizens for Sustainability and Natural Resources Defense Council rallied
Sunday on the Barryville Bridge that connects Barryville, New York with
Shohola Township, Pennsylvania, calling for a ban on fracking and frack
waste in the Delaware River Basin.
Last November the Delaware River Basin Commission issued draft regulations banning the act of fracking, but still allowed for related activities in the watershed, including importation and disposal of wastewater, and the extraction of water for use in fracking elsewhere.
Tracy Carluccio, deputy director of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network said they want to send a message to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to ban all fracking-related activities.
“It doesn’t make any sense to ban fracking and allow the pollution of fracking from fracked wastewater to ruin our water supplies anyway,” she said.
Carluccio was critical of Cuomo’s ban on fracking while at the same time fracked Pennsylvania gas is being allowed to be piped in to power the CPV electric generating plant in Wawayanda.
