WASHINGTON – Under the Obama Administration, school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program were barred from selling unflavored whole milk and could only sell one percent unflavored milk.
A bill in Congress, sponsored by Rep. Tom Marino of Pennsylvania, would allow whole milk to be offered.
Congressman John Faso (R, NY-19) supports the plan.
“A lot of kids are not drinking the low-fat milk; they throw it away. It doesn’t taste as good and it also doesn’t provide the vitamins, nutrients and fat content that growing children and their bodies need.”
Faso said the FDA is also proposing only milk from lactating animals
to be labeled as “milk,” noting the almond and soy milk would
not qualify. They do not have the nutritional value of milk, he said.
