POUGHKEEPSIE – State Senate candidate Karen Smythe announced on Thursday her support for the Child Victims Act, a measure to protect people who have been sexually abused as children.
Smythe, the Democrat challenging incumbent Republican Susan Serino, said the Senate has been the spoiler in adopting this measure all along.
“It expands the timeframe that you can go back to seek for justice, so for someone who is a child right now, the statute of limitations is so short that by the time a child gets to a place where they can really feel confident enough to speak out, the statute of limitations has long passed, so this expands the statute of limitations to allow child victims to receive justice,” she said.
The Democrat controlled Assembly has approved this measure when it comes up each year.
