Area unemployment rates continue to decline

ALBANY – The unemployment rate in all Hudson Valley counties declined in July when compared to July 2017, according to the state labor department.
Labor analyst John Nelson said coupled with an increase in new jobs, the region is doing well.
“We are slightly off our historical low, but we are really further removed from the historical highs as far as the jobless rates that were recorded during the recession. Overall, the job market is trending positively in the region,” Nelson said.
Columbia County continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.1 percent, down from 3.7 percent in July of last year.
Sullivan County dropped from 4.4 percent to 3.6 percent.
Putnam and Dutchess counties each had 3.8 percent, down from 4.4 percent.
Rockland and Ulster counties each dropped from 4.7 percent to 4.0 percent joblessness.
 Orange County fell from 4.8 percent unemployment in July 2017 to 4.1 this July.
Westchester fell from 4.7 percent to 4.1 percent.
Greene County unemployment went from 5.0 percent last July to 4.3 percent last month.
