Brothers charged with beating, robbing man who gave them a ride

MONTICELLO – Two brothers from Glen Wild are under arrest for allegedly beating and robbing a man who gave them a ride home.
The victim reported that on Thursday, July 19 at around 9 p.m. he gave Sheldon Schmitz, 19, and Steven Schmitz, 24, a ride home. The two men allegedly beat the driver and stole $20 from him after a dispute erupted.
The victim was treated at Catskill Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Orange Regional Medical Center.
The brothers went into hiding shortly after the crime, but Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies tracked them down.
On Tuesday, July 24 at about 12:30 p.m., a sheriff’s detective spotted Steven Schmitz coming out of a convenience store in Swan Lake. He was taken into custody and sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
On Wednesday, July 25 at about 9 p.m., an officer with the Liberty Village Police Department spotted Sheldon Schmitz walking down the sidewalk on Main Street. When ordered to stop, Schmitz took off running. He was eventually apprehended by Liberty officers, turned over to the sheriff’s office, arraigned and is also being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Both are charged with robbery, assault, and criminal mischief, all as felonies and misdemeanor charges of mischief and petit larceny.
