SAUGERTIES – The Saugerties Post Office at 111 Market Street will be renamed the Rep. Maurice Hinchey Post Office now that the president has signed it into law.
“Having the bill signed into law is a tremendous milestone and privilege for our family,” Hinchey’s wife and daughter, Ilene and Michelle Hinchey, said in a statement. “Maurice would be humbled to have the Saugerties Post Office named in his honor,” the women said, speaking for the Hinchey family.
The renaming effort for the Democrat lawmaker was pushed by Republican Congressman John Faso and Democrat Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
Hinchey served in the House of Representatives from 1992 through 2012. Prior to that, he was a state assemblyman from 1974 through 1992.
