CORNWALL – American Airlines pilot Matt Rettig has been selected
by the Democratic vacancy committee to run for State Assembly in the 99th
District. He will replace Orange County Democratic Party Chairman Brett
Broge, who was the candidate, but has declined the nomination.

Rettig, 45, said this is his “moment to really make an impact and
make sure the voice of the average family is heard loud and clear in government.”

Broge said Rettig will be a “dynamic advocate for the residents”
of the district.

Rettig said he is “energized and inspired by the recent surge in
community activism and believes that there’s a real value in having
ordinary citizens running for office.”
He said having “an outsider’s perspective means I can truly
recognize what’s working and what needs to be fixed.”

Rettig will face Republican Colin Schmitt in the November election.

Schmitt’s camp released the following statement: “Colin Schmitt
is currently fulfilling his service obligation to our State and Nation
during Army National Guard annual training. He is confident that his grassroots
campaign that helped secure four ballot lines and set a fundraising record
will continue to work towards victory regardless of what candidate the
democrats had yesterday, have today or will have on Election Day.”
