MONTICELLO – Since Monticello Village Manager David Sager resigned weeks ago, Mayor Gary Sommers has been serving in a dual role. The village board is in no hurry to search for a new manager, but rather wants to put that off until after the March 2019 village elections and explore changing from a manager form of government to a full-time mayor.
While Sommers supports consideration of a governmental change, he does
not personally back a full-time mayoral form of government for Monticello.
“What that would require then is somebody who would be willing to give up whatever business, whatever career they have,” he said. “Based on the fact that I am running for a four-year term, and if I don’t get reelected, I have to go back and start whatever I was doing again so I can earn a living – they were doing again – we’re not talking about me.”
Sommers said if the village board does consider a change in government form, it should be after public hearings and a referendum.
