CLARKSTOWN – Police in Rockland County have teamed up with Orange and Rockland Utilities to investigate a phone scam being perpetrated.
Several residents have received phone calls from a man claiming to be from O&R, telling them they owe $3,000 on their O&R account and that he would send a bill collector if they did not pay. The man instructed the victims to go to a store where they could obtain Green Dot cards, purchase them and call him back with the card information.
The number the suspect provided to the victims is answered, when called, as “Orange and Rockland.” That number is 888-223-2195.
The Clarkstown Police Detective Bureau is investigating the incidents.
Police said that anyone asking you to purchase cash cards to pay debt is almost always a scam. If you feel you have been a victim of such a call, you are advised to call your local police department.
