WHITE PLAINS – Westchester County ended 2017 with a $32.2 million deficit and faces a projected cash shortfall of $28.7 million for 2018.
The six-month-old Latimer administration must tackle ways to reduce that.
The independent auditors hired by the board of legislators detailed the concerns on Monday and County Executive George Latimer said his team is considering the means to shrink that gap.
“It is too early for us to have a complete plan of how we are going to handle 2018,” Latimer said. “There are things we don’t know yet to project ahead. The most obvious one is sales tax revenue. There has been an uptick in sales tax revenue for the first quarter. It’s too soon to know what happened in the second quarter, which jut ended nine days ago, and the heaviest part of sales tax comes in the fourth quarter, the holiday shopping season as we all understand.”
Latimer said he will explore all options including reviewing contracts and other spending cuts as well as sharing services with municipalities and school districts.
