Hinchey
WASHINGTON – Both houses of Congress have approved changing the name of the Saugerties Post Office on Market Street in honor of the late Congressman Maurice Hinchey and the bill now goes to President Trump for his signature.
Senator Charles Schumer said Hinchey, or “Mighty Moe,” as he used to call him, “deserves this honor for his determination, endless energy, rare legislative skills, and his unwavering commitment to his constituents.” He said the post office naming is “a fitting tribute to this hometown hero who relentlessly fought to represent the citizens of the very community he cherished so greatly in the House of Representatives.”
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said Hinchey was “a fierce advocate for our veterans and the environment, and he showed an unwavering commitment to his constituents.”
Republican Congressman John Faso said Democrat Hinchey’s service in the military, State Assembly and Congress “exemplify his lifelong commitment to our nation.”
Hinchey served in the US Navy from 1956 through 1959, in the state Assembly from 1974 through 1992 and in the US House of Representatives from 1993 through 2013. He passed away late last year.
