MONTICELLO – A Monticello man was arrested on Thursday on assault charges after he allegedly struck another man over the head with a soda bottle and two glass wine bottles.
Monticello Police said James Martin, 46, also known as “Butterball,”
was at the Monticello Mobil Mart at 8:30 a.m. when he approached a 30-year-old
Monticello man at the counter from behind and struck him in the head with
the soda bottle. Martin then pushed the man to the floor and repeatedly
punched him in the head and face and then grabbed two glass bottles of
wine from a display and smashed them over the man’s head. Martin
fled the store before police arrived.
The victim was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Officers reviewed video surveillance that showed the victim standing at the store counter when Martin came up from behind and struck him in the head with the bottle of soda. Martin then pushed the man to the floor, punched him and smashed the wine bottles over his head before fleeing.
Martin was arrested at 4:30 p.m. by Monticello police and was sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
