WHITE PLAINS – The Westchester
County Department of Social Services is tacking the issue of sex trafficking
by implementing the “Safe Harbour” program.
The program identifies youths who have been trafficked, sexually exploited or are at risk of victimization, and ensures that they are removed from dangerous situations.
The Department of Social Services works with a number of county departments on sex trafficking cases to insure that all needs are met, including the departments of Public Safety, Probation, Community Mental Health, the Office for Women and other community service providers.
County Executive George Latimer said to date more than 130 runaway and
sexually trafficked youths have been recovered in Westchester.
The county has also received a $25,000 state grant to safeguard and protect youths who are aging out of foster care.
Two private investigators have been tasked with seeking out missing youths from the county’s foster care system, and trauma response services have been provided.
