GOSHEN – A Town of Newburgh man pled guilty before Orange County
Court Judge William DeProspo on Monday to manslaughter in connection with
an April 2017 stabbing death.

Christopher Smith, 44, admitted that he stabbed the victim, William McMahon,
50, in the neck with a knife while he was staying at his Quaker Street
home and then buried his body in a large planter.

On June 30, 2017, McMahon’s family reported him missing and following
a lengthy investigation, his remains were located in the planter outside
Smith’s house.

“The unlawful taking of another human life is among the worst crimes
that one can commit, and the likelihood of killing increases dramatically
when a person chooses to use a weapon,” said District Attorney David
Hoovler. “My office will seek lengthy prison sentences for those
who resort to violence and weapons to settle disputes.”

The DA’s office recommended that when sentenced in August, Smith
should receive a term of 20 years in state prison.
