ALBANY – In honor of next summer’s 50th anniversary of Woodstock, State Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther has passed legislation designating Route 17B in Sullivan County as The Woodstock Way.
“Woodstock drew hundreds of thousands of people to Sullivan County to enjoy peace and music, and that experience defined an entire generation,” said Gunther. “We should do all we can to celebrate and highlight the Woodstock legacy, because it’s an important part of our history.”
The festival took place in 1969 attracting 400,000 people to Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, now the home of the Bethel Woods Center for Performing Arts.
“Woodstock was a monumental event in our nation’s history and we should do everything we can to increase awareness,” said Gunther.
The weekend festival redefined pop culture with headlines like Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Creedence Clearwater revival, The Who, and Jefferson Airplane.
The 50th anniversary next year is expected to draw thousands from all over the world.
