WASHINGTON – There is no immediate talk of the Coast Guard approving additional commercial anchorages on the Hudson River in the region, but just to be on the safe side, Representatives Eliot Engel (D, NY16) and Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) have requested that the agency commit to conducting early public outreach and release an environment impact statement before any new proposals.
The Coast Guard had entertained approving many additional anchorages between Yonkers and Kingston as per a request from the commercial marine shipping industry, but public outcry coupled with discussion in a Harbor Safety Committee got those plans scrapped.
“We’re just asking the Coast Guard to do things in a more transparent way this time around – clearly this means a lot to us, and they need to take that into account before they propose adding even a single new anchorage site,” said Maloney.
Engel said the region must remain vigilant, thus the call for the Coast Guard to “guarantee meaningful transparency, public involvement, and environmental review for any potential future proposals impacting the Hudson.”
