New interpretive signs on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge
HUDSON – Six interpretive signs have been installed along the newly rehabilitated sidewalk on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.
The signs were created in partnership with Columbia Memorial Health, which contributed toward their design and production.
The signs are placed along the three scenic viewpoints of the Hudson River Skywalk that provide visitors views of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River.
“These signs help convey the significant impact this region has played in shaping our nation’s history to visitors and tourists,” said New York State Bridge Authority Executive Director Joseph Ruggiero. “It is important to showcase the natural beauty of the region as well as highlighting the historical moments that make this area of the state so special.”
Historical information on the signs includes information from historical art figures Thomas Cole and Frederic Church and the founding of the Hudson River School of Art, and the history of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge and the Bridge Authority.
Other topics include the Thomas Cole House National Historic Site and Olana State Historic Site, which will be connected by a pedestrian trail as part of the Hudson River Skywalk project, and other interesting tourist sites in Columbia and Greene counties.
