Fairview Chief Chris Maeder consults with a representative of the
college’s facility maintenance
department and Fairview firefighters

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday,
firefighters from the Fairview and Poughkeepsie fire departments were
dispatched to Dutchess Community College for reports of smoke coming from
Falcon Hall. The building houses the school’s gym, weight room and some
classrooms. The building was in the process of being evacuated when the
fire department arrived.
Firefighters determined that an electrical phase to the college had malfunctioned, darkening five buildings on campus and an electrical motor in Falcon Hall short-circuited as a result, leading to the heavy smoke conditions in the building.
Poughkeepsie firefighters on Engine-2 were released from the scene while Fairview remained to ventilate the building and await the arrival of Central Hudson Gas and Electric.
