BEACON – The former Highland Hospital in the City of Beacon has been converted into 68 affordable senior citizen apartments.
The new homes resulted from an almost $25 million total renovation and redevelopment of the former hospital at 11 Hastings Drive by the Hudson Valley Housing Development Fund. The agency has developed some 400 apartments in Dutchess, Ulster and Orange counties, 300 of which are affordable senior residences.
Peg O’Leary, the non-profit agency’s CEO, said the need for additional senior housing remains.
“We are not getting younger, but by the grace of goodness we are getting older in so far as not are we getting older, we are living longer,” O’Leary said. “I fully expect that move into Highland Meadows Senior Development, moving in around the age of 62, will still be residing there, should they choose, 30 years from now.”
Of the 64 people who applied for apartments at the new Beacon facility, O’Leary said the majority currently live in the Beacon-Fishkill area.
