IDAHO COUNTY – Two brothers from Mahopac are missing and feared dead following a grim auto mishap on a back-country road in a remote section of Idaho County, Idaho.
Raymond Ferrieri, 24, and Jesse Ferrieri, 21, were part of a six-man hunting party traveling inside a vehicle that overturned on a narrow dirt road and careened into the Selway River around 5:45 a.m. last Monday.
Two of the occupants escaped the submerged vehicle from the raging river but the remaining four, including the brothers, have not been found.
For more than 24 hours, rescue crews were unable to search the submerged suburban due to strong river currents; however, when the truck was stabilized in the water divers found no one inside.
Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings said “search and rescue teams from the air as well as from the ground will continue scouring the rugged terrain until the victims are found.” He described the area where the men went missing as “back in the boonies. Located near the Idaho-Montana border; it takes a couple of hours to reach it using ATV’s. The area is also home to dozens of black and grizzly bears as well as wolves.”
The two other missing men are residents of Montana and Oregon. The pair that escaped are from Georgia.
Authorities said the men were part of a bear hunting party that had stayed the night before at a local campground.
