MID-HUDSON – Police agencies across the Hudson Valley/Catskills region are out in force during this Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of the summer season. They will be looking for impaired drivers.
Local and State Police will be patrolling roadways looking for drivers who are intoxicated.
The Dutchess County RID – Remove Intoxicated Drivers – organization
Thursday conducted a rally in Poughkeepsie attended by County Executive
Marcus Molinaro, who urged people not to drink and drive.
“During this holiday weekend, I strongly encourage commuters, drivers, visitors, tourists and residents to make smart choices. It is your choice to get behind a wheel, it is your choice to engage in drinking, be under the influence, and we ask you not to make that choice,” he said. “In memory of the lives lost and the hopes of protecting others, we ask you not to make that choice.”
While the weekend is set aside to honor the memories of military personnel who died while serving, it also signals the beginning of the summer barbeque and picnic season.
Even with gas prices topping $3 a gallon, drivers will be hitting the roads in big numbers now through Monday.
