SUFFERN – A former gymnastics coach has been arrested and charged with committing sex crimes against children who were under the age of 13 at the time.
Joseph Lewin, 67, was arrested on Wednesday and released from the Rockland County Jail after posting $10,000 bail.
Ramapo Police charged the Port Chester man, formerly known as Joseph Lewandoski, with five counts of sexual conduct against a child and one count of sexual abuse. He is accused of committing those offenses between 2001 and 2014 at his former places of business, “Joe’s Gym” in Hillburn and “The Gym” in Suffern; both establishments are now out of business.
Det. Lt. Michael Colbath said the police know he has worked at other businesses.
“We are aware that he has worked at other locations throughout Rockland County, but at this point, until we have an opportunity to speak with those businesses directly, we are not going to release the names of the businesses,” Colbath said. “It is a possibility that he may be associated with other businesses throughout New York State outside of Rockland and also out-of-state.”
Police are urging anybody who may have been a victim to call them at 845-357-2400. Five youthful victims have been identified and there may be adult victims as well, Colbath said.
