WASHINGTON – New York lost about 1,200 dairy farms in the past decade, according to statistics reported by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on Tuesday.
Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee said the crisis is a top priority. Saying few farmers can make money at current prices, the senator said she is calling for an immediate shot in the arm from the Department of Agriculture.
“Today, I am calling on the USDA to provide financial assistance to our dairy producers. I’m asking for $300 million, which is the exact same amount the USDA used to support cotton farmers in the south when their prices dropped earlier this year.”
Gillibrand said that would average out to about $8,000 per farmer in New York State. It would be direct cash for emergency relief.
