Haverstraw man charged in violent machete attack

NEW CITY – A Rockland County man is charged with attempted murder in a machete attack minutes before midnight on April 22.
Jeremy Barrett, 42, of Haverstraw was also indicted on charge of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation. He is in the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail
Barrett is alleged to have gotten into an argument with his girlfriend and according to the charges, the incident turned physical. The woman’s son attempted to intervene, the confrontation intensified and moved outdoors.
During the argument, Barrett walked to his car, retrieved a machete and then allegedly threatened to kill the son before striking him in the head with the weapon. The victim received a severe laceration to his head and began bleeding profusely. Family members pulled the son back into the home and lock the door.
Barrett fled in his car but was apprehended a short time later by Haverstraw police officers. The machete was found in the vehicle.
