WHITE PLAINS – The Westchester County Health Department confirmed that people who ate at or worked at the Mamaroneck Diner last week tested positive for norovirus, a highly contagious stomach bug that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea.
The county agency said the management and staff at the diner have been extremely cooperative over the past several days to ensure every precaution is taken to prevent the virus from spreading.
Norovirus is the most common cause of food-borne illness. Health officials said there is no treatment other than to make sure to drink plenty of fluids. The illness must run its course, which usually takes a couple of days.
The diner voluntarily closed on Friday evening, May 11, and has followed the recommendations of the health department, including discarding any open food, single-service food containers that might have been contaminated and food that would not require cooking. The diner also brought in an outside firm to thoroughly clean the restaurant with products that can eradicate Norovirus.
When the diner reopens, which is expected today, health department staff will be present to make sure those who report for work are healthy.
