MONTICELLO – From Friday evening, just after dark, until early Saturday morning, law enforcement agencies in Sullivan County received numerous reports of strange objects circling in the sky.
The objects were visible from Wurtsboro to Grahamsville and appeared to be traveling at a low altitude in an elliptical pattern.
Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, who was a state trooper stationed in Pine Bush in the 1990’s and investigated reports of UFO sightings by residents, said that this past weekend’s sightings had a simple explanation. “Resorts World Catskills had set up rotating spotlights in conjunction with Seinfeld’s comedy act at the casino this past weekend,” said Chaboty. “That combined with the fog cover that we experienced overnight made conditions perfect for the strange lights that people saw in the sky.”
Chaboty said that type of large spotlight, much more common a few decades ago, is typically used at grand openings to attract attention. Chaboty said that it may have worked. Jerry Seinfeld played to a packed crowd Saturday night.
