NEWBURGH – City firefighters in Newburgh are usually honored during the annual awards dinner attended by family, but this year, Fire Chief Terry Ahlers wanted the whole community to be aware of their achievements. For the first time, the awards were presented at a public ceremony last Friday. Ahlers said the community needs to know the dedication of the men.
“Our firefighters work 24/7,” Ahlers said. “Someone is always on duty no matter what the day of the week, time of the day, any kind of weather. Even on holidays, there are always at least 10 families celebrating their holidays without their firefighters at home.”
City Manager Michel Ciaravino said the families of the brave men also need to be thanked. “We acknowledge that sacrifice and we want to thank you on behalf of the entire community of the City of Newburgh.”
Captain Francis Bedetti is a retired Newburgh city firefighter, having served the city for 25 years. His two sons, Joseph and Nicholas, are currently Newburgh firefighters and among the honorees.
”It is an honor to have your kids represent what you did for a living,” the elder Bedetti said.
Joseph received a Life Saving Award for a water rescue and Nicholas received a Medal of Valor for his actions at the Verla explosion and fire in New Windsor.
The Bedetti family awards are bittersweet, though. Joseph is one of the 12 firefighters to be laid off when a federal grant expires at the end of July.
The city is working feverishly to secure funds to retain some, if not all, of those public servants.
