GOSHEN – A husband and wife from the Town of Goshen each pled guilty before Orange County Court Judge William DeProspo for failing to report income they received from a developmentally disabled man that had been living in a barn on their property.
John Quick, 68, pled guilty to felony criminal tax fraud. Mary Quick, 63, pled guilty to misdemeanor criminal tax fraud. They also admitted to failing to file their state income tax returns for 2012.
The investigation began when State Police received a complaint that the developmentally disabled man living on the Quick’s property was asking neighbors for food even though he was receiving Social Security and disability income.
The man, who is no longer living on the Quick’s property, is now receiving assistance from Orange County Adult Protective Services.
The case was initially presented to an Orange County grand jury, which charged the Quicks had failed to properly report their income on the state tax filing, including failing to report over $35,000 they received from the man. Another grand jury charged the Quicks with crimes including criminal tax fraud and the cases were consolidated into one indictment.
“I can’t overstate the importance of neighbors and other concerned citizens reporting crimes when they believe someone is being victimized,” said District Attorney David Hoovler.
